Een semester in York...

Ik ben Suzanne Slagboom en studeer momenteel voor een half jaar aan de York St John University in Engeland. In tegenstelling tot de Duitsers hier wordt Nederland maar vertegenwoordigd door 2 mensen, wat inhoudt dat ik heel de dag Engels praat. Het voordeel hiervan is dat mijn Engels en de snelheid van Engels praten al een heel stuk vooruit zijn gegaan. Thuis praat ik namelijk alleen maar Engels tijdens de les, maar hier word ik gedwongen om 24/7 Engels te praten. Dit resulteert af en toe in wat verwarring als ik dan weer met vrienden of familie uit Nederland praat, want mijn zinsbouw is Engels geworden!

York St John University

Verder komt het accent wat hier in York gesproken wordt in de buurt van een slechte Vicky Pollard (Little Britain) imitatie. Mensen met de naam Jamie of Amy wordt uitgesproken als 'Jaymeh' en 'Aymeh', en alles is 'summit' (something) met 'innit' (isn't it). Ook heb ik een paar nieuwe woorden en dingen geleerd die ik tot nu toe nog niet wist van Engeland, en ben ik erachter gekomen dat mijn achternaam in het Engels iets zeer smerig is, waardoor ik het niet meer in het openbaar durf te gebruiken!

I started working at the VU as an UD last September. I’ve been hired to perpetuate the French touch in Linguistics after Danièle’s departure, even though neither of my Swiss and British passports bears the Gallic blue, white and red colours. Hopefully my training at the Universities of Geneva and Neuchâtel, Switzerland, will do the trick (that, and the fact that French is my mother tongue, which helps).Speaking of tricks, they are precisely the type of phenomenon I’m interested in. Linguistic tricks, that is, and in particular the reasons lying behind our failure to identify them – and therefore also the reasons we fall for them. In my PhD thesis I tried to develop a cognitive pragmatic account of manipulative and uncooperative communication in order to understand why it is that, despite what we assume to be standard cooperative communicative settings – remember, Grice is nice –, manipulation and fallacious argumentation can still be successful.

My research project had as its goal the documentation of a previously unknown variant of Aymara. This language is unique from all other forms of Aymara, probably a result of its geographic isolation, which only now is coming to an end with the arrival of a road and a rapidly-growing outside influence. Together with the support of my committee (Leo Wetzels, Willem Adelaar, and Frans Hinskens, to whom I am greatly indebted), I have completed a description of this language in what is likely the short window before its death. I am greatly indebted to the support of all the Muylaqueños, in particular Edwin Banegas Flores and his family,who so kindly hosted me during my stay.

The result of the research is not only a linguistic description, but a corpus of narratives, myths, and ghost stories which is taken verbatim from the elders of the village. This collection of stories will soon be published as the first, and sadly, likely the last book in this particular language, thanks to a generous grant from the Cucu NGO. TiNT-dag 2010

Op vrijdag 3 december 2010 organiseert de Vereniging NL-Term in samenwerking met het Steunpunt Nederlandstalige Terminologie voor de tweede maal de TiNT-dag  aan de Vrije Universiteit te Amsterdam. TiNT staat voor Terminologie in het Nederlandse Taalgebied. Dit jaarlijks terugkerende evenement is bedoeld om actueel onderzoek en de professionele praktijk op het gebied van Nederlandstalige terminologie voor te stellen voor een breed publiek.

De TiNT-dag op de VU kan voor LCC'ers een aardige, makkelijke en goedkope kennismaking met terminologie zijn. Terminologie is in feite praktisch georienteerde taalbeschrijving op het gebied van tekstgenres, met een lexicale inslag (maar zeker niet beperkt tot het lexicon). Stimulus en taalaanleg in de taalontwikkeling van dove kinderen

Al eeuwenlang is de mens geboeid door de vraag wat er nu precies nodig is opdat een kind tot een normale taalontwikkeling zou komen. De geschiedenis heeft een aantal anekdotes over gruwelijke experimenten waarbij kinderen jarenlang zonder gesproken taalinput opgroeien. Men dacht zo de mogelijke aangeboren voortbeschiktheid voor taal en de rol van gesproken taalinput in het taalontwikkelingsproces te kunnen vastleggen.

Gelukkig zijn we ondertussen zo ver dat we niet langer kinderen in afzondering doen opgroeien om het mysterie van de taalontwikkeling te ontsluieren. Vandaag de dag wordt 2% van alle baby’s geboren met een zwaar bilateraal gehoorverlies. In tegenstelling tot de kinderen in de eerder genoemde experimenten, groeien zij gelukkig niet op in een sociaal isolement. Dankzij de medische en technologische vooruitgang van de laatste decennia kunnen veel van deze kinderen op een verschillende leeftijd toegang krijgen tot gesproken taal dankzij een cochleair implantaat. Dit maakt het mogelijk om niet alleen de aard van het menselijk taalvermogen en de rol van het kritische venster hierin te bestuderen, maar ook wat de invloed van taalstimuli is op de ontwikkeling van dit vermogen. Analyse van spontane taaldata van deze kinderen toont aan dat kinderen die geïmplanteerd worden vóór de leeftijd van 16 maanden de grootste kans maken op een normale taalontwikkeling: zij hebben een kleinere initiële achterstand en maken zich het taalsysteem sneller eigen dan kinderen die later werden geïmplanteerd. Hierdoor lopen ze die kleine taalachterstand zelfs gedeeltelijk in.
 

Dat taal en gehoor onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden zijn, wordt duidelijk wanneer men ook de kwaliteit van de spraakstimuli meeneemt als factor in het taalontwikkelingsproces. Het is bekend dat gehoorgestoorden in het bijzonder problemen hebben met de perceptie van spraak in rumoerige omstandigheden. Of dit perceptueel deficiet een belangrijke invloed heeft op de verwerving van grammatica bij deze kinderen is één van de fascinerende vragen waar ik op 12 november (om 15.45 uur) nader wil op ingaan.

Linguistic Bibliography Online is een naslagwerk voor linguïstiek met aandacht voor minder bekende, bedreigde en verdwenen talen. Het bevat ca. 270.000 referenties uit wetenschappelijke tijdschriften op het gebied van de linguïstiek.

De Linguistic Bibliography Online omvat theoretische linguïstiek, algemeen en per taal, uit alle geografische gebieden. De online editie bevat alle records van de gedrukte editie vanaf 1993, en nieuwe records worden maandelijks toegevoegd.

Dit bestand is te vinden via de e-resources op de homepage van de UB, www.ubvu.vu.nl.

Het is ook vanuit huis te raadplegen.

Wisselcolumn 6: Kinderen en geluk

Twee maanden geleden kreeg ik mijn tweede kind. Kaartjes met felicitaties vielen wekenlang door de brievenbus, maar sinds een paar weken weet ik dat ik die felicitaties met een korrel zout moet nemen. De krant (NRC 28-29 augustus) berichtte dat wetenschappelijk onderzoek had uitgewezen dat kinderen niet gelukkig maken. Proefpersonen werden een aantal keer per dag opgepiept met de vraag wat ze op dat moment deden en hoe gelukkig ze daarbij waren. Ouders bleken minder gelukkig te zijn dan mensen zonder kinderen.

Wisselcolumn 5: Mobile phones in Ghana

As in many developing countries, traditional media continue to play a dominant role in Ghana. The use of computers and access to internet is very limited. In 2002, only 1,37 computers per 100 inhabitants were available and in 2009 only 4% of the population had internet at home (more info). However, the use of mobile phones in Ghana shows a different development. Ghana has exceeded the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) target of mobile phone penetration level, five years ahead of the 2015 deadline set by the United Nations. Mobile phone use is one of the highest growing communication sectors in Africa (more info) . Six mobile phone operators have to compete in the Ghanaian market which has a population of about 24 million and it is obvious that they will do anything to get new customers. One of the most striking marketing tools used in the country is the painting of people’s houses and walls in the colour of the telecom operators.

Taking advantage of the poverty of Ghanaians by painting their houses is much cheaper than using official channels such as bill boards. For many Ghanaians the branding of their houses seems like a good deal; the painting of houses is done for free and people receive a small payment, depending on the visibility of the house. It is unclear how the distribution of painting works; sometimes half of the village houses are painted yellow (MTN) and the other half in red (Vodafone). The (sometimes illegal) branding of houses as it is done in Ghana has led to a public debate and in June 2010 the Minister of Communications has finally charged telecom operators to stop painting houses. Unfortunately, the marks left throughout the country are indelible for the coming decades.

Digitaal versus papier

De treinreiziger zoekt niet langer in een spoorboekje op hoe laat de trein vertrekt, maar zoekt dat vooral op via internet. Slechts 1 procent van de reizigers raadpleegt nog regelmatig het papieren spoorboekje. Vorige week kondigde de NS dan ook aan het papieren spoorboekje af te schaffen (zie NOS-bericht). Ook naslagwerken worden steeds vaker digitaal geraadpleegd in plaats van in boekvorm. De directeur van Oxford University Press betoogde dat de markt voor gedrukte (woorden)boeken langzaam verdwijnt en zijn uitgeverij zal in de toekomst het Oxford English Dictionary alleen nog digitaal uitgeven (zie bericht Telegraph). 

Papier lijkt het te verliezen van de digitale variant. Daarom een nieuwe poll: wat vinden bloggers van T&C van het bestaansrecht van het papieren boek?

Learning from UCLA

On Wednesday June 9, 2010, a VU University delegation consisting of 13 people headed by VU president René Smit went to the high ranking University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the United States. Three VU students were chosen to enforce the delegation by representing the VU University students during the visit. As a student-reporter for the university weekly Ad Valvas, I was one of the lucky students who was chosen to go to Los Angeles. This visit revolved around the important event that took place on Monday June 14, which was a historic day for our university and for UCLA: both universities signed a Memorandum of Understanding that implies close collaboration on four different fields. The universities have committed themselves to collaborate with each other on the following fields: 1). A general student exchange program; 2). A summer course; 3). Conducting a research together on diversity along with a South African university; and 4). Exchanging experiences and good practices of different departments, e.g. Human Resource Management, Marketing and Communication, etc.

Wisselcolumn 4: Ian McEwan's Solar

I have read all of Ian McEwan's novels and was particularly impressed by his latest three: Atonement, Saturday, and On Chesil Beach. Here's a writer at the height of his exceptional powers, and that's why I don't understand what he's trying to do in Solar. If anybody can help me out, I'd appreciate it.

To me, Solar reads like McEwan's first serious attempt at comedy--yes, the pun is intended. McEwan does not look like a genuine comedy writer to me--he should leave that to his rival Martin Amis, who is (or used to be?) one of my other favourite British authors. The devices of overstatement, farce, and the grotesque seem to have been applied too mechanically, and sit oddly with some of the more serious passages in the novel that recall the true McEwan.

The book turns on a plot that thickens and thickens, and then stops at the moment when everything threatens to go wrong for the main character, who is a malignant and fraudulous scientist. An appendix then presents a speech by the Nobel Prize Committee awarding the prize to the same main character, the speech containing a metaphor that has a genuine web of threads for its source domain. The web is held by six people who all have to pull at the same time, and then the web dissolves into its separate pieces of belt again. Apart from its thematic function in the narrative about science, this metaphor is also meant to suggest to the reader that this is how the denouement of the plot is to take place in their mind.

Haha.

Help!

Wisselcolumn 3: Nederland in het WK en een allochtoon.

Het waren toch bijzondere weken: wedstrijd na wedstrijd werd Nederland steeds meer oranje. Regelmatig hoorde ik mensen praten over de stand in hun WK-poules op het werk, met vrienden, in het koor, met de buren… Zelfs mensen die anders nauwelijks naar voetbal kijken. En niet alleen Nederlanders werden steeds blijer voor het Oranje-team. Als allochtoon ervaar ik vaak een extra laag bij zulke momenten: voor welk team ben ik eigenlijk en hoe blij of teleurgesteld ben ik met prestaties van de Nederlandse sporters? Gelukkig (er is altijd een positieve kant te vinden) hoef ik niet vaak te kiezen tussen Belarus en Nederland met sport…

Wat ik inmiddels wel weet -ook al word ik nooit een echte Nederlander- is dat ik oprecht blijdschap voelde toen Nederland in de finale kwam en pijn voelde toen ze hem verloren. Maar blijkbaar hebben zulke gevoelens niet alles met je afkomst te maken. Niet overal zijn er WK-poules, niet iedere Nederlander voelt iets bij het winnen of verliezen van zijn eigen team, en niet iedereen bespreekt zijn belevenis van het WK in de koffiepauze of tijdens de lunch. Dat hoeft natuurlijk ook niet. Er zijn genoeg andere zaken om je druk over te maken. Maar één ding is zeker: over vier jaar ga ik weer kijken, met mijn oranje shirt, rood-wit-blauw op mijn wangen en alle emoties die er dan opkomen.

Wisselcolumn 2: Keep smiling!

Laatst had ik een gesprek met mijn begeleider over (een versie van) het resultatenhoofdstuk van mijn proefschrift in wording. Hij was tevreden over het geschrevene en ik moest vooral zo doorgaan (positief!), maar had ook geconstateerd dat ik op een onderdeel in mijn annotatie (ik heb een corpus van zo’n kleine 300.000 woorden handmatig geannoteerd) de definitie die ik in mijn methodehoofdstuk had geformuleerd niet consequent had gehanteerd (niet zo positief).

Toen ik dit even later aan een aantal collega-promovendi vertelde en uiteenzette hoeveel extra werk mij dit ging opleveren (annotatie nalopen, SPSS tabel aanpassen, statistische analyse opnieuw, nieuwe tabellen genereren in Word, delen van het vermaledijde resultatenhoofdstuk opnieuw schrijven) kwamen zij –in koor– met dé oplossing: “dan pas je toch gewoon de definitie aan?” Nu moet ik eerlijk toegeven dat dat ook mijn eerste reflex was, alleen heb je dan weer iets met betekenisvolle resultaten en zo en een begeleider die je er fijntjes op wijst dat het wel de bedoeling is dat je proefschrift ook nog ergens over gaat. De weg van de minste weerstand is in dit geval helaas, zoals zo vaak, een heilloze. Aan de slag dus!

Terminologie op een bierviltje

Het Steunpunt Nederlandstalige Terminologie organiseert een prijsvraag voor studenten in Nederland en Vlaanderen: het gaat om het ontwerp van een bierviltje over terminologie. Ontwerp ons bierviltje en word beroemd! De winnaar krijgt spreektijd op het TiNT-symposium en een publicatie in de congresbundel.

Al een tijdje leeft bij het Steunpunt de wens de essentie van de terminologische theorie op een bierviltje weer te geven en die bierviltjes in grote oplage te verspreiden. Toen we onlangs zo’n viltje probeerden te ontwerpen, bleek dat een leerzame en uitdagende taak te zijn, die we niet zo snel tot een goed einde wisten te brengen. We zijn er inmiddels meer dan ooit van overtuigd dat dat mogelijk is, maar we willen het niet zelf doen. We schrijven een prijsvraag uit voor alle studenten aan bachelor- en masteropleidingen, zowel op hogescholen als op universiteiten.

De wisselcolumn

Zo'n wisselcolumn, hoe moet dat eigenlijk? Sinds 1999 werk ik nu aan deze universiteit. Daarvoor zat ik in Tilburg. Daar werkte een aio, Jeroen Aarssen, die inmiddels bij Sardes werkt als adviseur taalverwerving en taalvaardigheid. Omdat zijn achternaam met een dubbele a begint zit hij altijd vooraan in het alfabet. Toen het Tilburgse Letterenblad besloot om een wisselcolumn in te stellen, was Jeroen dan ook als eerste aan de beurt. En Jeroen has als titel voor die column "Aarssen mag even laten zien hoe het niet moet". In die column legde hij ook uit hoe hij aan die titel kwam. Jeroen was indertijd op school niet zo goed in gymnastiek. En dus werd hij herhaaldelijk door de gymleraar voor de groep gezet met de mededeling "Aarssen mag even laten zien hoe het niet moet".

NIAS-verblijf

It’s late May now and I’m nearing the end of my ten-month fellowship period at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study. The time here has been very useful to finish writing some papers that were past due, rethink the focus of the book project which I came here to work on, co-organize a couple of conferences, and receive some invitations out of the blue to get involved in a few collaborations. The book project began with a focus on the relation of gesture studies to the field of cognitive linguistics, and has turned into a work questioning what the boundaries on “language” are from the perspective of cognitive grammar (it appears it’s become broader and more focussed at the same time). The co-organization of conferences has involved one on Language, Culture, and Mind  and one on Researching and Applying Metaphor, and both have been facilitated by the wonders of Skype.

Uitgesproken Engels

Op 24 en 25 juni 2010 organiseren de VU en de UU een tweedaags symposium “Uitgesproken Engels” over de uitspraak van het Engels in Nederland. Het symposium is gericht op verschillende groepen Engelse taalleerders en taalgebruikers, waaronder bedrijven, de media, scholen en onderzoekers. Gastsprekers op het symposium zijn:

PhD project Rebecca Present-Thomas

Hello everyone! I am Rebecca Present-Thomas and I arrived in Amsterdam at the beginning of February all from way from California to start my PhD here at the VU. My research project (under the supervision of John de Jong and Bert Weltens) seeks to build upon the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages by investigating the academic writing skills of advanced learners (CEFR levels B2-C2) of English. In other words, what is the linguistic reality underlying the upper levels of the CEFR? Which specific features of discourse competence are mastered at each of the upper levels of the CEFR?

As I'm new to the Netherlands, I welcome any tips on life, culture, language, events and anything else I should know to make my time here as enjoyable as possible!

AWIA Symposium 2010

Onderzoekers van de leerstoel 'Taal en Communicatie' organiseren op 10 en 11 juni 2010 het 'Awia Symposium' (Anela Werkverband Interactieanalyse) op de VU. Awia is een werkgroep voor interactie / discourse analisten uit Nederland en Vlaanderen. Het thema van het symposium is 'Interactie in institutionele settings'.

Op de eerste dag van het symposium verzorgt Geoffrey Raymond, assistant professor Sociologie aan de University of California Santa Barbara (UCSB), een lezing met als titel 'Issues of relevance in action formation: Positioning, rights, and relations in "out of place" actions' en een datasessie. Verder presenteren Awia-leden hun 'work in progress' op het gebied van discourse analyse.

Reality

Currently, I am a ‘visiting scholar’ at the University of California at Santa Barbara (UCSB), working on one of the chapters in my PhD thesis. Specifically, I am here to improve my conversation analytic skills and to write a chapter on typing in police interrogations. Coincidentally (or not?), CA (conversation analysis) started in CA (California) in the 60’s. Lucky me!

Life here is incredible. I wake up to a bright sun every morning (really, there are no exceptions) and I make sure the palm tree is still standing in front of my window on one side and the mountains still look beautiful on the other side. I then pluck an orange from the tree across the street and make my way to the beautiful beach-side campus of UCSB. Once there I take very exciting classes, I have discussions with very motivated PhD students and I attend meetings and data sessions with fellow visiting scholars and inspiring professors. On the weekends I travel to great places like Berkeley or Las Vegas where I do not only attend fascinating conferences, but I also have fun. So, can life get any better than this?

Ester Šorm: postdoc visuele metaforiek

Sinds 1 oktober 2009 werk ik als postdoc binnen het NWO-programma ‘Visual metaphor: a psycholinguistic perspective’, een samenwerkingsproject tussen de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, de Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen en de Universiteit van Tilburg. Mijn project voer ik uit onder leiding van Gerard Steen en Wilbert Spooren. Het onderzoek gaat over metaforiek in afbeeldingen, zoals advertenties en cartoons, en mijn voornaamste taak is het ontwikkelen van een betrouwbare methode waarmee we visuele metaforen kunnen identificeren en beschrijven. Een dergelijke methode is in de afgelopen jaren al voor verbale metaforen ontwikkeld en de vraag is nu of dat ook voor metaforiek in afbeeldingen gaat lukken.

Topvrouwen slecht in beeld: beeldvormingsonderzoek nu ook bij T&C

Op 17 december 2009 verscheen in de Volkskrant een artikel in de krant waarin VU-studente Muk van Ravels aan het woord wordt gelaten over haar scriptie ter afronding van de Master Beleid, Communicatie en Organisatie. Het onderwerp wordt de zaterdag erop ook opgepikt door de TROS Nieuwsshow, waar Muk uitgebreid aan het woord is gelaten over de verschillen in berichtgeving over belangrijke mannen en vrouwen.

Rational ways of using language - Herbert H. Clark, Stanford University

Everyday language is far from the ideal that is modelled in traditional theories of grammar, pragmatics, and communication. In conversation, speakers decide what to say in collaboration with their partners; they change course as they speak, often mid-sentence; and when they misjudge what their partners know, they deal with the consequences. As a result, they deviate from the ideal: they pause, add uh and um, prolong words, repeat words, redo phrases, and abandon phrases, all in great numbers. By traditional theories, these deviations are irrational. But are they? In those theories, language users are assumed to have omniscient rationality, with unlimited knowledge and processing capacities.
